03/05/2012What is happening is you aren't tightening the bolts enough. When the starter engauges the flywheel it's trying as hard as it can to move, and all it has to do is move a fraction of a inch and it will start grinding. You maybe able to save the starter you have now so try this approach. Loosen the starter bolts several turns.

Because his flywheel is backwards (presumably) the starter bendix (the gear part that extends and turns) grinds against the face of the incorrectly installed flywheel.
